In 1823 a young sixteen year old, named William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it to his opponents goal-line, his school mates at Rugby Public school all followed his example, and there the sport of Rugby Union was born. In 1996 Rugby Union turned professional and since then has grown dramatically in popularity, due to rising standards and global television coverage. Rugby Union, in terms of corporate hospitality, has now become an extremely popular corporate sport. During late Winter/early Spring, the highlight of the Rugby Union season is the Rugby Six Nations Championship where England, Wales, Scotland, France, Ireland and Italy do battle to lift the Webb Ellis Six Nations trophy. The RBS Six Nations Championship - is played annually and the format of the Championship is simple, each team (England, Wales, Scotland, France, Ireland & Italy) plays every other team once, with home field advantage alternating from one year to the next. Two points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Unlike most other rugby union competitions the bonus point system is not used. Victory in every game results in a 'Grand Slam'. Back to back Grand Slams have been achieved on five occasions, by Wales in 1908/1909, by England in 1913/1914, 1923/1924 and 1991/1992 and by France in 1997/1998. England holds the record for the most number of Grand Slams won with 12, followed by Wales with 9, France with 8, Scotland with 3 and Ireland with 1.
Rugby Autumn Tour - Once again, during November and December, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and France will play host to various touring sides in preparation for the Six Nations Championship. Recent years have seen world champions South Africa and Southern Hemisphere greats Australia and New Zealand visit Europe to hotly contest in hard-fought battles.
