FIFA World Cup - 2010 sees the 19th FIFA World Cup visit South Africa for the first time. England have already booked their place, along with South Africa, Holland, Spain, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Australia, Japan, Korea Republic, Korea DPR, Slovakia, Brazil, Paraguay, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Serbia, Honduras, USA, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
32 teams from all over the World will compete in 64 matches at 9 host cities in a sporting spectacular which will be viewed by 40 billion people worldwide. These 32 countries will split into 8 groups of 4 where the winner and runner-up of each group will proceed to the second round, which will take place on a knock out basis. The winners of each game will proceed to the quarterfinals and ultimately the finals, should they maintain their winning form. The final takes place in Johannesburg on Sunday 11th July 2010.
Champions League - Who could forget the champions league final, that took place on that rainy May day, in Moscow, where Manchester United battered Chelsea in the first half, only to go in at half time at 1-1? The roles were then reversed when Chelsea dominated the second half, but were unable to capitalise on their possession. Finally the match was settled on penalties, with Ronaldo missing leaving it up to the Chelsea skipper, John Terry to win the trophy...the rest is history. 2009 saw Barcelona lift the coveted prize, against a lack-lustre Manchester United, to become the European Champions. This year sees the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid host the final. Can an English team once again dominate Europe? This year sees the start of the Europa League, which will climax with the final taking place in Hamburg on 12th May 2010.
UEFA Europa League - The new name for the UEFA Cup reflects a change to the format previously agreed, with the group stage expanding to 48 clubs, who play six matches on a home-and-away format similar to the UEFA Champions League.
Domestic Cups and Play Off Finals - The FA Cup is the oldest and most well-known domestic cup competition in the world and has the second largest television audience after the FIFA World Cup. Can Chelsea once again lift the trophy or will a surprise team such as Portsmouth, once again deny one of the big four? Also, the Carling Cup last year proved a big draw with Manchester United being crowned champions in 2009. The play-off finals conclude the domestic football season, where all is at stake in these winner takes all matches.
